The Korean Language Institute at Korea Maritime & Ocean University (Director Kim Jeong-hoon) held a Hangeul Day Celebration on 13th October at the BPA Hall in the office of International Affairs, marking the significance of the creation of the Korean alphabet. The event was organized for Korean Language Students studying at the institute to deepen their understanding of Korean culture and to appreciate the beauty of Hangeul.

During the celebration, a Korean Writing Contest 백일장(Baekiljang) and a Korean Speech Contest were held, drawing enthusiastic participation from students representing various countries. In the writing contest, students expressed their thoughts and experiences about studying Korean and living in Korea, while in the speech contest, participants gave speeches on topic such as “My Life in Korea”. Outstanding students were recognized with awards for their creativity and fluency in Korean.

Among the winners, CLAUS BERRIL(Level 2, Indonesia) received the Prize in the Speaking Contest for a touching presentation delivered in Korean. After the contest, the student shared, “I haven’t been in Korea for long for my language program, but since I had a short exchange student experience at this university in the past, life in Korea doesn’t feel too new or unfamiliar to me. That’s why I wanted to share my experiences and help students who are living in Korea for the first time. I think participating in the speech contest gave me a great opportunity to do that, and it was a really valuable experience.”

Following the contests, students enjoyed a mini cultural experience session and took commemorative photos together, celebrating their progress in learning Korean. The event fostered cultural exchange and strengthened friendships among students from diverse backgrounds.

Director Kim Jeong-hoon of the Korean Language Institute said, “Hangeul Day is a meaningful occasion to celebrate the excellence of the Korean alphabet. I am proud of our international students who are learning Korean with passion and expressing themselves confidently through writing and speech. I hope they continue to grow and share their love for Hangeul.”
