The Joint Naming Ceremony of Four Training Ships for the Marine and Fisheries National Universities
Our university held a joint naming ceremony for the completed construction of training ships for national universities at Hanjin Heavy Industries in Busan at 14:00 on February 21.
The training ship construction project for national universities was carried out jointly by five universities including Mokpo National Maritime University, Kunsan National University, Chonnam National University, Jeju National University, and our university with the total project expenses coming to 270.4 billion KRW.
Until now, marine and fisheries universities have experienced many difficulties in applying the international convention of the International Maritime Organization, which have been strengthened recently because of aged training ships that have been operated for 25 years
. Therefore, we started the basic design for new training ships in 2015 and they were constructed in 2016 by Hanjin Heavy Industries. After going through various processes including steel cutting, keel laying, and launching, we have finally held the naming ceremony.
Of the five university training ships, one was named “Hannara” for our university, “Segyero” for Mokpo National Maritime University, “Saehaerim” for Kunsan National University, “Saedongbaek” for Chonnam National University, and “Ara” for Jeju National University. The naming ceremony was held for four ships excluding the “Ara” of Jeju National University, which is already in operation after a naming ceremony last October. They will be delivered to the affiliated universities one by one in February and April after the final finishing and commissioning steps.
According to the practice that women call out the ship’s name and bless the ship in naming ceremonies, one of our university’s female students (Min-Ah Kim, a senior student of the Division of Maritime Transportation Science) announced the birth of the new training ship by striking the rope hiding the ship’s name with an ax. All the participants then prayed for safe navigation by performing the ceremony of releasing a champagne bottle at the ship’s bow and engaging in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Marine and Fisheries National Universities
The training ships for maritime and fisheries national universities have been constructed in accordance with the standard ship model for each university using the batch construction method. As a result, they have advanced equipment and safety facilities in keeping with the fourth industrial revolution.
Among them, our university’s Hannaro is a 9,196-ton ship, boasting a size 2.5 times that of the old training ship constructed in 1993 (3,640 tons). This is much larger than Hanbada (6,686 tons), which is the largest training ship in Asia.

Seaworthiness and safety have been greatly improved by applying the Special Purpose Ship Code, which has been strengthened beyond the existing safety standards for training ships, starting with the initial design. Furthermore, the offshore-plant-related education and ship control performance have been improved by applying the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS).
The ship has also been built as an eco-friendly ship with a nitrogen oxide reduction device (SCR) to satisfy the NOx Code Tier 3 for the main engine and generator with regard to air pollution regulations. Space utilization and the educational environment needed by training ships have been greatly improved through the provision of multi-purpose training spaces that can be used for various seminars and other purposes.
