Korea Maritime and Ocean University(KMOU) has been selected as the main organization to lead the ‘Sri Lanka Maritime University Master Plan Establishment’, a program supported by Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA, President LEE Mikyung)

KMOU’s past experience of spearheading Republic of Korea’s transformation into one of the leading global maritime powers, is now being put to use in KOICA projects supporting Indian and Pacific countries. KMOU’s involvement in such activities is expected to elevate its reputation in the global community.

Located off the southwestern end of India’s coastline, Sri Lanka is becoming the maritime hub in the region. It connects Asian, Middle East, and African markets thanks to its geopolitical situation, as the country is the converging point of the shipping routes of the Indian and the Pacific Ocean. But due to its lack of experts and training facilities in the ocean, marine transport, and marine products industry, the government of Sri Lanka has requested the government of South Korea for technical assistance and consultation to establish a plan to develop Sri Lanka’s own Maritime and Ocean University.

KOICA is aiming to set up a mid-long term master plan to develop Sri Lanka Maritime University by sending marine experts to Sri Lanka. It is also planning to offer training program in South Korea for faculty members, government personnel of related organizations, and college students of Sri Lanka. Continuing from September of this year to late 2021, the program is going to be provided 2,500,000 USD from KOICA’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund(EDCF). A consortium comprised of KMOU, Pukyong National University, and AUM&LEE Architects&Associates were sent as inspectors for the program in September 26th, marking the commencement of the program.
