Holding the 2017 AMFUF and Encouraging Expedition of Marine Silk Road
Park Han-il, President of Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU) visited Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. During the five-day visit from November 8, he made efforts for the KMOU’s international exchange.
In particular, President Park participated as a Chair in the 2017 Asia Maritime and Fisheries Universities Forum (AMFUF) held in Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport on November 9 and 10. There, he discussed strategies to exchange the information for ‘Sustainable Development in the Shipping and Fisheries Industry’, promote the academic exchange among member universities and institutions, and expand mutual research, which can lead to a mutual growth. In addition, Gyeongsangbuk-do province (Governor: Kim Kwan-yong) and Korean Institute of Navigation and Port Research (Presdident: Jeong Tae-gwon) concluded agreements with the AMFUF to establish and expand the network with Asian academic institutions in the ocean and fisheries field, respectively.
Under the suggestion by the KMOU, AMFUF was established in 2002 with about 24 oceans and fisheries universities of 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific region for a mutual prosperity in Asia. Together with the KMOU, 17 universities in 10 countries including Shanghai Maritime University, Guangdong Ocean University, AMET University, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Kobe University, Vietnam Maritime University, Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University are participating in the 2017 AMFUF.
On November 8, President Park visited the training ship HANBADA, anchored at Ho Chi Minh Port after finishing the ‘2017 Silkroadia: Expedition of Maritime Silk Road by Ship’ which is co-organized by Gyeongsangbuk-do and the KMOU. During his time on board, he offered words of encouragement to crews and expedition members for their successful voyage. The one month-journey retraced the history along the 12,000km-silkroad ranging from Pohang in Korea, Manila in the Philippines, Malacca in Malaysia, Bankok in Thailand, Sihanoukvile in Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam.
On 11, he participated in the opening ceremony of the 2017 Ho Chi Minh City-Gyeongju World Culture Expo with cadets of the HANBADA. The participation aims to inform the KMOU of the world as a ocean-specialized university. On 12, he had a meeting with the KMOU alumni to strengthen the overseas alumni network.
